In a world that continulously moves digital, penmanship is often being forgotten. Penmanship is an important step in cognitive development, it's hard to just skip over these developmental stepping stones that children need and crave. Good handwriting is linked to overall better academic performance, but reguardless of if it's nice neat handwriting the practice of writing leads to improved memory recall and retention. Sometimes we write off handwriting practice after early elementary but focusing on better handwriting can be beneficial for all ages. A resource we have been using to improve our penmanship is Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting ebook by Everyday Education, LLC.
Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting ebook can be used as a primary teaching tool for early elementary or as a supplemental for all ages. It has 60 lessons using a phonics based teaching meothod. Students will learn italic penmanship, progressing from straight to slant, then joined cursive, and then progresses into calligraphy. This eBook comes in PDF format, with 218 8.5 x 11" pages, but it's also available as a consumable print book. As an ebook, the students write directly in the book but it's all reproducible and includes guideline pages which help students develop a rhythmic even handwriting. Each page is numbered so you can remember how far you are in the book or to go in to re-print a certain page again.

Our favorite part of this book was the calligraphy with a straight edge pen. This was a special treat for our family to write with something different, everyone in our home has enjoyed trying this out, even Nana and Pops. Using the model sentences as copywork; copying letterforms and spacing, and writing each word directly beneath the model. We especially liked the guides that helped remind us what angle to keep the pen facing. Handwriting is a form of art, everyone has their own unique techniques and calligraphy just adds a special flare to that. With everything being shutdown right now we have more time on our hands and I find myself taking the extra time to write some handwritten letters with my new calligraphy skills. It really is nice special touch!
