My little bookworms love to read, they will go on reading book after book from our home library, the kindle, the public library, or borrowed books. Often they read it once and move along. I have a deal with them that if there's a movie they can watch it after they read it and interestingly enough they usually want to re-read the book afterwards. We all know that the re-reading a book helps you gain even more detail and certain elements start to really click...you know those "ahh haaa" light bulb moments. Well another more structured way to get students to dive deeper in a book is through study guides. Progeny Press made some study guides that make great literature companions, we have been working on A New Coat for Anna Study Guide and My Side of the Mountain Study Guide.
Progeny Press study guides are downloadable PDF documents. There is a file for the study guide itself and a file for the answer key. They print out in color on standard 8.5x11" paper. I was able to download and print mine easily, I put them both into seperate report style folders, purchased their books and the kids were beyond ready to jump right into their new books.

A New Coat for Anna Study Guide is made for grades K-3 and is 30 pages long. It includes vocabulary, career studies, comprehension questions, a time line, biblical references, mapping, history discussions and some ideas for additional crafts, activities and field trips. Krissy is 7 years old and was able to read the book independently numerous times, then we worked on the study guide together. We usually read the book each time before we work on the study guide. Having the study guide handy the book really didn't get old at all, there was something new we talked about each time we read it. We even came up with some fun activities on our own, like rolling yarn balls and we're looking to maybe try dying some clothing with food like they did in the book.
My Side of the Mountain Study Guide is made for middle school students grades 5th-8th and is 62 pages long. This study guide is packed with vocabulary, comprehension questions, literary concepts, connections with math and science, safety discussions, writing techniques, biblical references, and some recommendations for hands on activities, recipes movies and field trips. My 10 year old, Karter's favorite part to this study guide was that he could read the entire book prior to starting it, he gets so antsy and can't stand when we go snail pace through books. Then his second time through the book was as he went through the study guide and it allowed him to dig deeper into it. Karter loved this book and has been begging to go primitive camping for weeks now, he's working on his survival bag.
You can tell these study guides were made by a teacher, the delicately woven discussions built in are in a way that will help the students really understand and remember the content. Also noteworthy these ebook study guides were made with teachers in mind, it comes with sharing abilities for students in classes as well, either via printing or through private electronic disbursement. This would be great for homeschool co-ops as well!!mThe only thing I’d love to see added to the study guides would be QR code’s in place of the URL links, some of the links were rather lengthy and it would just save time to scan a code! I would definitely would recommend Progeny Press study guides, there are a variety of different titles for almost all ages and grade levels.
We have enjoyed these guides by Progeny Press, but don't just take our word for it other families from the Homeschool Review Crew reviewed numerous guides, so be sure to check out their reviews by clicking on the banner.
