What is a Menstrual Cup?
My 4 year old son asked me this and it was really hard to answer him but the harsh truth is its a cup that holds blood! It's made out of silicone and very flexible. You fold it one of many different ways, insert it, twist and make sure it suctioned in place and you're good to go for up to 12 hours!
The Switch:
After 10 months of breastfeeding I decided I needed an additional birth control, I went with Paraguard hoping hormone free would prevent my cycle from returning. Not so much though, I think the procedure itself made it return in full force! After about 6 months of miserably heavy cycles, I finally ordered a menstrual cup. I first heard of them when I was starting my cloth diapering journey while I was still pregnant, I did some brief research on them and just saved the idea for later. Over a year later when my cycle did return I started thinking about them more but hadn't made the decision because I had a dozen or so boxes of tampons still stashed from my couponing days. Little did I know I breezed through those bad boys real quick and many more before the day finally came last summer that I got one. I had a friend who gave me her experience from hers and I did a ton of research! The number one thing I noticed was that majority of women go with the most common name in menstrual cups, Diva cup or Lunette. Just because a company has the best marketing doesn't necessarily mean it's the best! I noticed many women, even my friend, that were turned away from menstrual cups completely because of bad first experiences. Which face it, when you're paying $40 for a menstrual cup you don't really wanna blow a ton of money trying out different ones till you find one you like. Ultimately I decided to go with a Sckoon cup. The shape and design of it was very ergonomic and I was able to get it on Amazon with $3 overnight shipping because it was definitely an emergency purchase! It's been worth every penny, I will never go back to tampons!!
Some of the bad reviews from others were it was large and uncomfortable, the holes weren't easy to clean out, the holes made it leak, the outside had bumps that made it uncomfortable, others stained and didn't look pretty after a couple cycles.
