So I came across some great deals one day. I picked up a nursing cover and a sling for free from 2 different websites only had to pay for shipping. Originally I got the nursing cover with a thanksgiving coupon code someone gave me and then after checkout I got a coupon code for the free sling, then at that checkout I was given a coupon code for a free carseat canopy. I checked out the website and I fell in love, I loved the concept, however I didn't know the gender yet and my favorite prints were of course the girly ones. So I set it aside and said I'd wait till after I find out the gender...that whole sleep on it theory...I got to thinking I could probably make one, then I could make it in a pattern I LOVE! Black Friday rolled around (I still didn't know the gender) and material was sooo cheap I scooped up enough to make 2 of these. After having the material sitting on my craft table for 2 months while I had a full load of photography through the holidays I finally got around to it last week!
Materials Needed:
-1 1/3 yards - Fabric for Top - I used Fleece, if your in warmer states or having a summer baby you can use a lighter material.
-1 1/3 yards - Fabric for Bottom - I used Minky, again you can choose to use a lighter material.
-Sew on velcro

| - Cut top and bottom material - 35" wide by 42" long. - Create curved corvers with a plate, bowl, or pot. - Pin together with fronts facing together. - Cut out 4 pieces for the straps - 4 1/2" wide by 9 1/2" long (Optional: For one of mine I pieced together the outter portion of the 2 straps by cutting 2 pieces from the bottom material measuring 2" wide by 9 1/2" long, then 4 pieces of the top material measuring 1 1/4" wide by 9 1/2" long. Completed size of the 2 pieced together pieces should be 4 1/2" wide by 9 1/2" long) - Place 2 of the pieces of straps face to face, sew one long side. - Cut 3/4" velcro to 3" wide pieces, decide on placement for velcro. One piece on the bottom inside or outside and one piece on the top opposite side of the bottom. Placement could matter if your material is directional. - Sew velcro securely into place...I sewed it twice because the straps will get the most wear and tear. - Place material face to face again and sew all the way around, leaving a 1- 2" opening to turn it right side out, I sewed it twice because again the straps will get most wear and tear. - Turn it right side out, then sew the opening shut from the outside - Repeat for other strap. - Hard part is over, the rest is a breeze! - Sew around the blanket that is pinned together face to face still, only need go around once this time and leave a 3-4" opening to turn it right side out. - Clip around curved corners, then turn right side out. - Sew a small 1/4" seam around the outside to give it a nice finished look and to close up the opening. - Now is a good idea to put the blanket in the carseat carrier and decide where the best placement will be for the straps. You don't want the front to hang too low, because it will touch the ground. Pin straps to blanket once you've decided on location. Be sure any directional fabric is directionally correct. (Approximate Guide: Slightly angled inward, 4in apart, 9.5in from the sides, 15in from the top, 17in from the bottom) - Sew on the straps, and your done! :) |
Final Product:
This makes for a great Handmade Baby Shower Gift, you can also do this project as an up-cycle - by taking an old blanket and adding straps to it. You can get creative with the straps as well by making them tie, or button instead of velcro...I personally always have bad luck with my sewing machine and velcro, so I think next attempt I may try something else!! Also by making this the fabric quality and design is limitless, there's sooooo many cute patterns out there!!
